IGCSE Biology: Characteristics and Classification of Living Organisms

All living organisms share seven characteristics: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition. Organisms are classified into groups based on shared features, and each species is given a two part Latin name consisting of its genus and its species.

Topic 1 of Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 looks like easy recall, and that is exactly why students lose marks on it. Cambridge wants precise definitions rather than everyday descriptions, and it wants the binomial system written correctly. Answer: A species is a group of organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring. The binomial name is the genus followed by the species, for example Homo sapiens.

Where students lose the mark. Omitting the word fertile. Without it the definition is wrong, because different species can sometimes breed but the offspring cannot reproduce.

An arthropod has three pairs of legs, a body divided into three parts and one pair of antennae. Name the group it belongs to and give two features of a different arthropod group.

Answer: It is an insect. Arachnids have four pairs of legs and a body in two parts.

  2. A different group is the arachnids, which include spiders and scorpions.

  4. Arachnids have a body divided into two parts and no antennae. Crustaceans and myriapods are also acceptable alternative groups if their features are given correctly.
How the marks are awarded. 1 mark for insect. 1 mark for naming a second arthropod group. 1 mark for each correct feature of that second group, up to 2.
Where students lose the mark. Giving features of the group you already named. The question asks for a different group, so the two features must belong to that other group.
Question 3[3 marks]

Explain why classifying organisms using DNA sequences gives a more accurate picture of how closely related two species are than classifying them by appearance alone.

Answer: DNA base sequences reflect shared ancestry directly, while appearance can be misleading.
  1. Classification is intended to reflect how closely organisms are related through evolution.
  2. The more similar the base sequences in the DNA of two species, the more recently they shared a common ancestor.
  3. Appearance can mislead, because unrelated organisms living in similar habitats can evolve similar body shapes, while closely related organisms can look very different.
  4. DNA sequencing therefore places organisms in groups that reflect real evolutionary relationships rather than surface similarity.
How the marks are awarded. 1 mark for classification reflecting evolutionary relationship or common ancestry. 1 mark for more similar base sequences meaning more closely related. 1 mark for explaining that similar appearance can arise without close relationship.
Where students lose the mark. Saying DNA is more scientific or more modern. That is not an explanation. The mark is for linking base sequence similarity to shared ancestry.
Question 4[3 marks]

A student uses a dichotomous key with paired statements to identify an unknown plant. State what a dichotomous key is and describe how the student should use it.

Answer: It is a series of paired statements followed in sequence until a name is reached.
  1. A dichotomous key is a set of numbered pairs of statements about observable features.
  2. The student starts at the first pair and chooses the one statement that matches the specimen.
  3. That statement directs her to another numbered pair, and she repeats the process.
  4. She continues until a statement leads to the name of the organism rather than to another number.
How the marks are awarded. 1 mark for paired statements or two choices at each step. 1 mark for choosing the statement matching the observed feature. 1 mark for following the instruction to the next pair until a name is reached.
Where students lose the mark. Describing the key as a list of descriptions. The defining feature is the pair of alternatives at each step, which is where the word dichotomous comes from.

What are the seven characteristics of living organisms?

Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition. Cambridge expects a definition of each: for example sensitivity is the ability to detect and respond to changes in the internal or external environment, and excretion is the removal of the toxic waste products of metabolism.

How do I write a binomial name correctly?

Write the genus first with a capital letter, then the species with a small letter. Italicise the whole name in typed work or underline it in handwriting. For example, Panthera leo for a lion. Marks are given for the format as well as the name.

Why are viruses not placed in any kingdom?

Viruses are not made of cells. They have no cytoplasm, no cell membrane of their own and no ability to respire, grow or reproduce without invading a host cell. Because the five kingdom system classifies cellular organisms, viruses sit outside it.

What is the difference between a genus and a species?

A genus is a group of closely related species that share many features. A species is a single group within that genus whose members can reproduce to produce fertile offspring. In Homo sapiens, Homo is the genus and sapiens is the species.
